Faithful With What God Has Given You

God Is Looking for Faithfulness

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:21

Those are some of the most beautiful words a Christian could ever hear.

Not, “Well done, thou famous servant.”

Not, “Well done, thou successful servant.”

Not, “Well done, thou servant who built the biggest ministry.”

Jesus said:

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

Faithfulness is what God is looking for.

God is faithful to His Word. And when we learn to trust His Word and obey His leading, we begin to see the fruit of living by faith.

The Christian life isn’t about trying to impress God or impress people. It is about knowing Him, trusting Him, loving Him, and being faithful with whatever He puts in our hands.

Sometimes what God asks us to do will look important to everyone.

Sometimes nobody will notice.

But God notices.

And that is what matters.

Feed, Exercise, and Rest

There is a simple principle in physical training:

Feed. Exercise. Rest.

You eat to give your body fuel. You exercise to make your body stronger. Then you rest so your body can recover.

The Christian life has a similar rhythm.

We need to be fed by God’s Word.

Jesus said:

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
— Matthew 4:4

Then we need to exercise our faith by actually doing what God’s Word tells us to do.

James says:

“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
— James 1:22

And we also need to learn how to rest in God.

Jesus said:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

Feed.

Exercise.

Rest.

Learn God’s Word. Practice God’s Word. Trust God with the results.

You Were Never Meant to Be a Spectator

The Bible calls the church the body of Christ (all believers working together as different parts of Christ’s body).

Paul explains that every part of the body has a purpose.

“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:27

That means you have something to contribute.

Your local church needs you.

Maybe you’re called to preach.

Maybe you’re called to teach.

Maybe you’re called to encourage people.

Maybe you’re called to give.

Maybe you’re called to pray.

Maybe you’re called to serve behind the scenes.

Maybe you’re called to do something so ordinary that nobody else even notices.

Whatever God has given you, use it faithfully.

Peter says:

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another.”
— 1 Peter 4:10

The word minister means to serve.

God didn’t save us merely so we could sit in a church building once a week and consume spiritual information.

He saved us so that we could become part of what He is doing in the world.

The Kingdom of God Is Righteousness, Peace, and Joy

But serving God isn’t supposed to become a miserable religious routine.

The kingdom of God is bigger than that.

Paul writes:

“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
— Romans 14:17

Righteousness means being made right with God and learning to live in a way that honors Him.

Peace means resting in God’s care instead of being ruled by fear.

Joy is the deep gladness that comes from knowing God—even when circumstances aren’t perfect.

Jesus said:

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:30

Jesus understands that you have to go to work.

He understands that you have responsibilities.

He knows you have a family.

He knows you have bills.

He knows you have to make a living.

God isn’t asking you to pretend that your earthly responsibilities don’t exist.

Instead, He wants you to bring those responsibilities under His lordship (His authority over your life).

We Work, But God Provides the Harvest

One of the greatest lessons of faith is learning the difference between working and worrying.

We work.

We obey.

We plant.

But God gives the increase.

Paul wrote:

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:6

We have a part to play.

But God is the One who ultimately provides the harvest.

That is why Jesus told us:

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
— Matthew 6:33

Put God first.

Trust Him.

Do your part.

Then leave the results in His hands.

When You Put God First, Your Family Sees It

If you’re married and have children, your faith becomes part of your children’s education.

They are watching you.

They’re watching how you handle problems.

They’re watching how you respond when money is tight.

They’re watching whether you pray.

They’re watching whether you forgive.

They’re watching whether you actually trust God.

You can tell your children about faith, but there is something powerful about letting them see faith in action.

The Bible says:

“Train up a child in the way he should go.”
— Proverbs 22:6

Your children don’t need to see a perfect parent.

They need to see a parent who knows where to turn when life isn’t perfect.

They need to see someone who can say:

“I don’t know how God is going to do this—but I trust Him.”

I Asked God, and He Answered

I recently experienced this in a very personal way.

I was believing God for a certain amount of money for our anniversary.

I wasn’t talking about the money already sitting in our personal or business accounts.

I was asking God for something beyond that.

So I asked Him.

I received it by faith in Jesus’ name.

And then I simply said:

“Lord, I trust You.”

I went about my day.

While I was recording something, a notification appeared on my phone.

Someone had sent me the exact amount I had been believing God for.

Actually, it was four times more than what I had asked for.

All I could say was:

“Thank You, Lord. Hallelujah!”

I share that not to boast.

God gets the glory.

I’m sharing it because sometimes we need to remember that God is still God.

He still hears prayer.

He still provides.

He still cares about His children.

And Scripture tells us:

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:19

That doesn’t mean we treat God like a vending machine.

It means we learn to trust our Father.

All Things Work Together for God’s Purpose

Romans 8:28 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Notice that Scripture doesn’t simply say, “All things work together for good.”

It says:

“To them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

God has a purpose.

The question is whether we are willing to submit ourselves to that purpose.

The word called means that God has given us a purpose and an assignment.

But God’s calling doesn’t always look the way we imagine.

Your Assignment May Be Different From Mine

Maybe you think serving God means preaching to thousands of people.

Maybe you think you need to build a ministry.

Maybe you think you need to start a church.

But what if God asks you to do something completely different?

What if He asks you to serve quietly?

What if He asks you to volunteer at your local church?

What if He asks you to help one person?

What if He asks you to clean the bathrooms?

Would you still do it with joy?

That’s the test.

Because God isn’t impressed by the size of an assignment.

God is looking at the faithfulness of the person carrying it out.

Jesus said:

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”
— Luke 16:10

The Bondservant Who Chose to Serve

Paul repeatedly described himself as a bondservant of Jesus Christ.

A bondservant was someone who willingly chose to remain in service to a master.

That gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to follow Jesus.

Jesus sets us free.

But because we love Him, we willingly give ourselves to Him.

We can say:

“Lord, I belong to You. Whatever You want me to do, I will do.”

That’s not forced slavery.

That’s surrendered love.

Paul wrote:

“For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman.”
— 1 Corinthians 7:22

In Christ, we are free—and our freedom gives us the opportunity to willingly serve Him.

Don’t Confuse Activity With Obedience

There is another important warning.

You can do many religious things and still miss the heart of God.

Jesus warned about people who would one day say:

“Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?”

And Jesus responded:

“I never knew you.”
— Matthew 7:22–23

That’s sobering.

These people were doing things in His name.

But Jesus said He didn’t know them.

Why?

Because God isn’t only interested in what we do.

He cares about the heart behind what we do.

We can build something for God while secretly building it for ourselves.

We can preach because we want attention.

We can serve because we want recognition.

We can give because we want people to praise us.

We can even do impressive spiritual things while operating out of selfish ambition.

God sees deeper than the outward appearance.

God Looks at the Heart

This is why the heart matters so much.

Paul tells Timothy:

“Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.”
— 1 Timothy 1:5

Faith unfeigned means genuine faith—faith that isn’t pretending.

God isn’t impressed by a religious costume.

You can wear a three-piece suit.

You can wear jeans.

You can wear a beard.

You can shave your beard.

You can wear linen.

You can wear something completely different.

None of those things make you spiritually mature.

Clothing doesn’t make you holy.

A hairstyle doesn’t make you holy.

A particular Christian culture doesn’t make you holy.

Jesus changes the heart.

Don’t Turn Christianity Into a Cultural Costume

Throughout Christian history, different cultures have developed different ways of expressing their faith.

Some people dress formally for church.

Others dress casually.

Some cultures wear suits.

Others wear traditional clothing.

The important question isn’t:

“Does this look like my Christian culture?”

The better question is:

“Am I honoring God?”

Romans 12:2 says:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The renewing of the mind means allowing God’s Word to change the way we think.

That’s where real transformation begins.

Give God Your Best

There is also something beautiful about preparing ourselves to meet with God.

The Old Testament repeatedly shows God’s people washing themselves, preparing their clothing, and setting themselves apart before approaching Him.

The principle is not that God requires a particular fashion style.

The principle is honor.

When we come before God, our heart should say:

“Lord, You are worthy.”

That applies to our worship.

It applies to our time.

It applies to our money.

It applies to our work.

It applies to our relationships.

It applies to everything.

Paul says:

“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
— Colossians 3:23

That’s the heart of Christian service.

We do it for the Lord.

We Don’t Come Before God Empty-Handed

Giving is another expression of honor.

My own mother taught me this when I was growing up.

When someone gave me money, she would sometimes tell me:

“That’s not for you. That’s for the Lord.”

She was teaching me something about honor.

Giving isn’t simply about money.

Giving is about recognizing that everything we have ultimately comes from God.

Proverbs says:

“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase.”
— Proverbs 3:9

The word firstfruits refers to giving God the first and best portion.

The principle is simple:

God comes first.

Jesus Has Set Us Free

When we understand what Jesus has done for us, serving Him stops being about earning His love.

We serve because He already loved us.

We obey because He first loved us.

We give because He has given to us.

We forgive because He has forgiven us.

The Bible says:

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
— Ephesians 1:7

Redemption means being bought back and set free.

Jesus has redeemed us from sin.

He has broken the power that sin had over us.

We don’t have to be controlled by our old life.

We don’t have to be controlled by fear.

We don’t have to be controlled by the enemy.

We belong to Jesus.

The Holy Spirit Is Our Guarantee

And God hasn’t left us alone.

He has given us the Holy Spirit.

Paul says that believers are:

“sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance.”
— Ephesians 1:13–14

The Holy Spirit is God’s presence living and working in the believer.

The word earnest means a guarantee or down payment—a promise that something greater is still coming.

The Holy Spirit gives us an inward witness that we belong to God.

Our salvation isn’t based on how impressive we look.

It isn’t based on how much attention we receive.

It isn’t based on how large our ministry becomes.

Our hope is in Jesus Christ.

And because of Him, we have the promise of eternal life.

What If Nobody Ever Sees What You Do?

Here’s the question I want you to take with you today:

What if God asks you to do something that nobody else ever notices?

Would you still do it?

Would you still serve?

Would you still give?

Would you still pray?

Would you still obey?

Would you still say:

“Yes, Lord.”

That’s where faithfulness becomes real.

Because when you know that God sees you, you don’t need everybody else to see you.

Hebrews 6:10 says:

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love.”

God sees.

God remembers.

God knows your heart.

Be Faithful With What Is in Your Hands

Maybe your assignment is big.

Maybe it’s small.

Maybe it’s public.

Maybe it’s completely hidden.

It doesn’t matter.

If God gave it to you, be faithful.

Don’t compare yourself with somebody else.

Don’t look at another person’s ministry and think you have to become them.

Don’t measure your obedience by somebody else’s assignment.

Jesus has given each of us something to do.

Your responsibility is to be faithful with what He gave you.

One day, we will stand before Him.

And the thing I want to hear more than anything else is:

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

Not “Well done, thou successful servant.”

Not “Well done, thou famous servant.”

Not “Well done, thou impressive servant.”

Faithful servant.

A Prayer for Faithfulness

Father, in the name of Jesus, help us to be faithful.

Teach us to love Your Word.

Teach us to trust You.

Teach us to walk by faith and not by sight.

Help us not to compare our calling with someone else’s.

Give us the humility to serve You wherever You place us.

If You call us to something great, let us do it for Your glory.

If You call us to something small and hidden, let us do it with the same joy.

Purify our hearts.

Give us sincere faith.

Give us a good conscience.

Teach us to serve You because we love You—not because we want recognition.

Thank You for redeeming us through the blood of Jesus.

Thank You for the Holy Spirit who lives within us and gives us the assurance that we belong to You.

And when our lives are finished, let us hear those precious words:

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

In the holy name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Final Thought

Don’t spend your life trying to prove how important you are.

Spend your life being faithful.

The world may not see everything you do.

Your church may not see everything you do.

Your family may not see everything you do.

But God sees it all.

So keep praying.

Keep serving.

Keep giving.

Keep trusting.

Keep obeying.

Keep walking by faith.

And whatever God has placed in your hands today—

be faithful with it.

Because in the kingdom of God, faithfulness is never wasted.

Peace and love as you work out your salvation,

in Jesus Name,

bsf
